The School of History and Culture, Henan University, was established in 1923. It is among the earliest founded schools of Henan Univesity. The School not only enjoys a long history but also possesses strong teaching and academic forces. Through over ninety years’ development, it has formed the tradition of fusing China and elsewhere, covering ancient and modern times, and emphasizing both academic innovation and general education. It has won good academic reputation both at home and abroad. Famous experts and senior scholars such as Fan Wenlan, Meng Yutong, Guo Shaoyu, Ma Feibai, Zhu Fangpu, Sun Haibo, used to teach here. World-renowned historians and archeologists such as Yi Da, Shi Zhangru, Bai Shouyi, Han Rulin once studied in this school.
Currently, the School of History and Culture has 125 faculty members, of whom 44 are PhD supervisors, 118 are MA supervisors (including 26 professional supervisors and 39 supervisors from our cooperative institutions), 65 are professors and associate professors, 90 have doctor’s degree, 3 are Distinguished Professor of Henan province, 4 are Distinguished Professor of Henan university, 4 are Yellow River Expert, 1 is a member of the National History Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education, 1 is the national pacesetter of teacher’s professional ethics, 1 is crowned as the national excellent teacher, 2 are winners of Zeng Xianzhi educational fund, 4 enjoy the special allowance granted by the State Council, 5 are excellent experts of Henan province, 9 are leaders in academic technology of Henan province, 10 are young and middle-aged backbone teachers of Henan province, 3 are excellent teachers of Henan province, 4 are Henan province’s young excellent experts in Social Sciences, 4 are cultivation objects of innovative talents in Henan province’s colleges and universities, 5 are winners of grand prix on teaching skills oriented toward colleges and universities of Henan province and 5 hold the posts of president and vice-president in the national academic associations. In the past five years, teachers of this school have presided over 34 National Social Science Fund Projects, more than 60 projects on provincial and ministerial level and around 70 horizontal projects at various levels. Moreover, 60 books and more than 1000 academic papers have been published by the faculty members of our school.
Presently, there are 6 academic disciplines in the School of History and Culture, Henan University, which are respectively General History, World History, Archeology, Museoloy, Tourism Management and Culture Industry Management. Of these disciplines, the disciplines of General History, Wrold History and Archeology provide both master's and doctoral programs. They are all first-level disciplines funded by Henan province. Moreover, the disciplines of General History and Archeology are key component of Henan Province's characteristic and preponderous displinary cluster, "The Displinary Cluster of Yellow River Civilization", while the discipline of Archeology has been qualified for archeological excavation in China. In 2003, the Discipline of Tourism Management was granted the authority to confer master’s degree. In 2010, this discipline was authorized to confer Master's Degree of Tourism Administration. In 2014, its professional master's program was ratified by the government and meanwhile, it was ranked as the nation's top ten discipline for Tourism Studies.
In the field of training MA and PhD students, the School of History and Culture conducts joint training programs in collaboration with the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Museum of China, Museum of Henan Province, Ben Gurion University of Israel and Paichai University of South Kerea. At present, the School has over 300 MA and PhD students, as well as more than 1000 undergraduate students.
After many years' effort and construction, the School of History and Culture has established sound subject platforms and research institutions, such as the Center for Yellow River Civilization and Sustainable Development, which is the key research base of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education; the Center for Israel Studies, which is the research base of Chinese Ministry of Education for regional and national studies; the Laboratory of Classic Literature and Digital Cultural Relics, a distinctive laboratory built by both central and local government; the Collaborative Innovation Center for Inheriting Yellow River Civilization and Constructing Modern Civilization, which is the collaborative innovation center of Henan province; the Research Center for Ancient Chinese History, which is the key research base of humanities and social sciences of colleges and universities in Henan province; the Institute of History of the Song Dynasty and the Institute of World History, which are both Open Research Centers for key disciplines on Humanities of colleges and universities in Henan province; the School of Henan Province’s Tourism Culture, which is constructed by the Tourism Administration of Henan province and the School of History and Culture of Henan university; the School of Song Dynasty’s Culture, which is constructed by Kaifeng municipal government and the School of History and Culture of Henan University, and key institutes of Henan university, such as the Institute of Modern China Studies, the Institute of World History, the Institute of Jewish Studies and the Center for Tourism Planning.
