The Department of Chinese History has 48 full-time teaching and research staff, including 18 professors, 18 associate professors, 15 doctoral supervisors and 38 masters’ supervisors. Of these, 40 have doctorate degrees and scholars under the age of 45 account for 85%. Doctoral candidates in Chinese History are enrolled into five major subject directions: Ancient History of China, Modern History of China, History of Chinese Historical Philology, Special History (the History of Chinese Culture), and History of Chinese Political System. The main admission mode is the ordinary entrance examination.
Master's students are enrolled into six subject directions: Ancient History of China, Modern History of China, History of Chinese Historical Philology, Special History (the History of Chinese Culture), History of Chinese Political System, and Science of Chinese Historical Geography. The main admission modes are ordinary entrance examination and exemption from examination through recommendation.
The main courses for undergraduates and graduate students in this discipline include Theoretical Basis and Frontier of History, Research Methods and Academic Norms of History, Writing and Practice of Historiography, Study of Ancient Chinese Historical Materials, Study of Modern Chinese Historical Materials, Textual Criticism, Theory and Method of Historical Geography, Special Studies on Ancient Chinese History, Special Studies on Modern Chinese History, Special Topics on History of Chinese Ideology and Culture, Special Topics on History of Chinese Political System, Lectures on Frontier Issues of Chinese History, etc.
The graduate education of Chinese History discipline aims to make students, under the premise of mastering the systematic subject knowledge more extensively and solidly, read a lot of original literature and present research achievements, skillfully apply theories and methods of History and other related disciplines, form perfect theoretical discipline foundation and discipline knowledge structure, and possess the ability to engage in innovative research independently; While receiving discipline training, students will also cultivate good moral character, collective conscience and innovative spirit. Among these, the training goal for doctoral candidates is to make them engage in independent research in a certain field of Chinese History, possess higher academic attainments in their research field, and achieve remarkable innovative research results. The main direction of employment is institutions of higher education and scientific research. The training goal for master’s students is to make them become compound talents to meet the needs of pluralistic society and possess preliminary ability of doing independent scientific research, so that they can hold teaching positions in universities or middle schools and can engage in works related to arts, tourism, cultural industry, press and publication, administration, and public affairs.
